Jamuary Update (0.1.2)

The Lavender Hollow Jamuary update is now released! I've spent the last month tweaking and testing, and for once I even accomplished everything I set out to do! This update sees several QOL improvements, two new characters, item combination, and a newly finished ghost quest!

Changelog:

  • A functional hourly time system (12-minute day cycle), in addition to the previous sun/moon cycle
  • Two new NPCs, Salem and Emmy, that only show up at certain times of the day. I won't spoil when!
  • Item combination has been added! There are two possible item combinations at the moment, and both are attached to the quest of one ghost.
  • Tien's quest (the green-and-pink ghost) is now functional start to finish! I plan to elaborate on the story more in future updates, but my priority with this update was to get it off the ground.
  • QOL Improvements:
    • Interacting with a headstone with a ghost above it now brings up a menu prompt. It allows you to talk to the ghost, read the headstone, or place an item at the grave. Hopefully the icons are self-explanatory, but feedback on this system would be great!
    • The item menu now includes a description for the item selected, as well as an item use menu and feedback messages when you drop or combine items.
    • The player can now move diagonally.
    • There is now one more doorway (cellar stairs) from the basement to the graveyard, to make it easier to travel back and forth to speak to Daisy.
  • Bug fixes:
    • Mouse input works as well as keyboard input now.
    • Interacting with objects or characters while next to an item no longer overwrites dialogue.

Known bugs in this update:

  • On my Ubuntu 19.04 computer, the game doesn't run and throws a "System.EntryPointNotFoundException: GetTimeZoneInformation" error. If you experience this bug on another Linux computer, please contact me! I think it's probably dependency related, but I'm still looking into it.
    • In the meantime, if you encounter this error but want to play the game, I've left the Halloween Demo (0.1.1) up for you to download.

Thank you so much for following along, and I hope you enjoy the new changes! In the coming months I plan to develop the game at my own pace, without the crunch and burnout that game jams tend to bring. During that time I'll post regular devlogs, so you can see what's happening behind the scenes. In the short-term, keep an eye out for a Lavender Hollow roadmap to keep tabs on where the game will go next!

As always, all feedback and bug reports are very much appreciated. Contact me here at itch, or feel free to send me an email at cicada.carpenter@gmail.com. Stay spooky!
