Rekindle Update (0.1.3)

The 0.1.3 update is finally here! I had hoped to get this out in November, but life has a funny way of catching up with you. I've been sorely missing gamedev though, and I recently hosted the first (of many, hopefully) Rekindle Jam with some friends, so I'd like to get back on track for another demo update this October!

Changelog:

  • This update comes with a lot of visual updates! I'm working on replacing the Kenney assets I used for the initial release with self-created assets.
    • A few updates include: a unique model for the visitor center, grave textures, 3D assets for 2D placeholders (countertops, boxes, ladder) and more!
    • Items can also be placed on top of (some) objects now. Countertops and boxes are fair game, as is one easter egg!
  • A new ghost! I won't spoil her location, but not every ghost you can find is confined to the graveyard...
    • You might want to check back with Daisy after you help the new ghost, if you're a lore person!
  • QOL Improvements:
    • The visitor center now fades when you're behind it, so you can see where you're going. I'll do some visual updates to make this look nicer in the future.
  • Bug fixes:
    • You can no longer talk to ghosts as they disappear
    • Items now take priority over other dialogue, so it's impossible to "lose" items in gravestones, ghosts, etc.
    • The game no longer immediately crashes on Ubuntu!

And last but not least, I'd like to share a little bit of a reflection for the Rekindle Jam!

My goal for this weekend was to release the next demo update of Lavender Hollow. I almost made it! I broke down six tasks to finish, and I was able to finish all but one (taking screenshots - I want to do some quick touchups on some assets tomorrow before I take the last two). Here's what I was able to wrap up:

  1. Finishing the assets (model + textures) for the new ghost!
  2. Fix a collision bug with the visitor center fade effect
  3. Tweaking the narrative (writing + code) for the new ghost
  4. Allow items to be placed on top of objects
  5. Take screenshots (2/4 done)
  6. Write the update changelog!

I wasn't able to release the demo by the end of the jam, because I failed to account for actually exporting the project ^^; but all things considered, I think that's pretty good! And it gave me a little extra time to wrap up a few more loose ends I noticed while working.

Thanks for tuning in, and enjoy the update! <3
